It may seem a bit odd when a person who is in the middle of roasting another person, suddenly stops to offer a public apology to a third person.
Well, that happened during the Mayweather-McGregor World Tour. During their second press conference in Toronto, Floyd Mayweather was in the middle of roasting Conor McGregor, calling him a 7-figure fighter (rich people, man) and a quitter because he tapped out to Nate Diaz last year.
In the middle of that heated exchange, Mayweather stopped and took a couple minutes to show love towards Conor’s boss, UFC President Dana White.
The reason why he apologized was because when the idea of a potential Mayweather-McGregor super fight first came up, White made an offer to Floyd for $25 million dollars. $25 million to Floyd and $25 million to McGregor. Floyd laughed at that offer and commented about Dana White, “Dana White, I remember when you used to carry my bags.”
An actual deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars, and a world tour for a simple press conference seems to have given Mayweather a change of heart regarding the UFC president.
Mayweather had this to say about Dana White during the MayMac World Tour in Toronto…
Dana, I could never disrespect you,” Mayweather said on stage. “I’ve known you for 21 years. You’ve done a hell of a job with this company. And I want to continue to watch you grow. I want to watch you continue to build the UFC, because it’s all about combat sports. You’ve done a hell of a job. No matter what I’ve said about you in the past, as a man I look in your face and apologize and tell you I’m sorry. But you’ve done a hell of a job with this company.”
He was not done praising his long-time acquaintance…
“Dana White used to come over my house every day,” Mayweather said. “I’ve been knowing Dana White 21 years. I’m big enough to apologize to Dana White. I’m a real man, that’s what real men do. I’m man enough to apologize. I’ve said some stuff about Dana. I’m only human. He takes shots at me; I take shots back. I’m only human. I’m not upset with Dana White, I’m not upset with anybody.”
It was strange to see Mayweather publicly apologize in a moment of hatred towards White’s employee. Nevertheless, Floyd wanted to clear the air between him and White and that is what his public apology did as they shook hands and seemed to be friendly with one another on stage.
One thing is clear, we should not expect any public apologies from Mayweather or McGregor regarding one another anytime soon.
