McIlroy withdraws from RBC Heritage after missing Masters cut

After missing the cut at the Masters last week, Rory McIlroy decided to sit out this week’s RBC Heritage at Harbour Town, the PGA Tour said on Monday.

After entering the Masters as the odds-on favorite to win his first Green Jacket at Augusta National, McIlroy recorded a disastrous second-round 77, effectively ending his chances of completing the career Grand Slam.

With the field cut down to 143 players for the tournament on Hilton Head Island, where Jordan Spieth is the defending champion, McIlroy will not be replaced by an alternate.

McIlroy, 33, had won the last of his four majors in 2014 and was looking to win the Masters to complete the career Grand Slam, which has only been accomplished by Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, and Tiger Woods.
