UCONN Women Stunned on Last Second Bucket by Mississippi State

The UCONN Women’s basketball team was on a historic run with their 111 straight wins, the longest in all of NCAA basketball. At times, UCONN’s opponents didn’t even look like they were playing the same sport as the powerhouse.

But, on Friday night in Dallas’ American Airlines Center,  Mississipi State showed the country that UCONN wasn’t invincible and they did it in the most exciting way possible.

The Bulldogs had tried to make history before when UCONN’s winning streak was merely half the size a few years ago in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs played UCONN in the Sweet 16, and lost by 60.

Needless to say, they were hungry for this one. Mississippi State came out of the gates ready for the challenge as they kept pace with the Huskies for the first few minutes. Then the Bulldogs

Mississippi State came out of the gates ready for the challenge as they kept pace with the Huskies for the first few minutes. Then the Bulldogs went on a run, leading by nine points at the end of the first quarter.

But, there was no way that UCONN could lose, right?

Mississippi State kept their foot on the gas as they extended their lead to 13 on a layup from Chinwe Okorie. Then, a three-pointer by Breanna Richardson brought the Bulldogs lead to 27-13. The Bulldogs dug their ground and stayed tough on defense for the rest of the half as UCONN could only get to within eight by the end of the half.

But, there was no way that UCONN could lose, right?

UCONN was in uncharted territory being down at half, but the Huskies fought back and began to play like the team that hadn’t lost a game in over three seasons. The Huskies clawed their way back into the game and took the lead with four minutes to play in the third quarter. Then, it was a good old fashioned dogfight from the two schools for the rest of the game.

Mississipi State had small leads in the fourth quarter, but the Huskies kept it close and didn’t let their deficit get out of hand. With three seconds left, the Bulldogs had a chance to win the game, but UCONN stood tall and Gabby Williams blocked what would have been the game-winning shot. At the end of regulation, the score was deadlocked at 60.

Mississippi State took an early lead and tried to fend off the Huskies’ offense. Deadlocked at 64, it looked like there would be another overtime to settle the Final Four matchup. However, with 13 seconds left, the Bulldogs inbounded a pass, ran the clock down, and put up a last second shot from Morgan William.

The last second heave from William went in, and the Huskies winning streak would end at 111, with a 64-62 defeat at the hands of the Mississipi State Bulldogs.

March Madness isn’t just for the men, and the ladies wanted to show what they could bring to the table. And for the Bulldogs, they may have just pulled off one of the greatest upsets of all time.
